This publication is an image-ful glance at the exciting contemporary art made by Maya and Zoque painters, photographers, sculptors and performance and new media artists from the southern state Chiapas, Mexico. Emerging and mid-career creators mix and match a range of strategies, rescuing Classic Maya imagery, reconfiguring traditional backstrap weaving motifs, freely appropriating the colonial heritage and Western figurative representation.This picture book mirrors the themes and schemes of contemporary art practice among traditionalist peoples. The new wave of Maya/Zoque artists honor their culture through respect for the old ways and militant hope for the new, employing irony, spiritual vision and exposé of historic and actual injustices.
